Jehovah's Witnesses and homosexuality
How does God view homosexual behaviour?
Bible reveals that according to Jehovah God sexual desires may be fulfilled only between a husband and a wife.
And God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. And God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. Further, God blessed them and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:27,28)
That is why a man will leave his father and his mother and he must stick to his wife and they must become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)
Before they could lie down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from boy to old man, all the people in one mob. Before they could lie down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from boy to old man, all the people in one mob. And they kept calling out to Lot and saying to him: “Where are the men who came in to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intercourse with them.” (Genesis 19:4,5) Then Jehovah made it rain sulphur and fire from Jehovah, from the heavens, upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah. Then Jehovah made it rain sulphur and fire from Jehovah, from the heavens, upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah. So he went ahead overthrowing these cities, even the entire District and all the inhabitants of the cities and the plants of the ground. (Genesis 19:24,25)
That is why God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; That is why God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full recompense, which was due for their error. (Romans 1:26,27)
in the knowledge of this fact, that law is promulgated, not for a righteous man, but for persons lawless and unruly, ungodly and sinners, lacking loving-kindness, and profane, murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, manslayers, in the knowledge of this fact, that law is promulgated, not for a righteous man, but for persons lawless and unruly, ungodly and sinners, lacking loving-kindness, and profane, murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, manslayers, fornicators, men who lie with males, kidnappers, liars, false swearers, and whatever other thing is in opposition to the healthful teaching according to the glorious good news of the happy God, with which I was entrusted. (1 Timothy 1:9-11)
“‘And when a man lies down with a male the same as one lies down with a woman, both of them have done a detestable thing. They should be put to death without fail. Their own blood is upon them. (Leviticus 20:13)
So too Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them, after they in the same manner as the foregoing ones had committed fornication excessively and gone out after flesh for unnatural use, are placed before [us] as a [warning] example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire. (Jude 1:7)
What is the attitude of Jehovah's Witnesses toward homosexuals?
Bible condemns homosexual behaviour. On the other hand Jehovah is not partial
(Acts 10:34), he is always willing to accept and support people regardless their sexual orientation,
if they avoid bad behaviour. Some early Christians who had formerly practiced homosexuality
changed their habits and become members of early congregations:
What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom. And yet that is what some of YOU were. But YOU have been washed clean, but YOU have been sanctified, but YOU have been declared righteous in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
Situation today is similar - the person who struggles with homosexual desires can choose not to act on those
desires and become Jehovah's Witness and enjoy a clean standing before God. Reasoning bookpublished by Watchtower provides the illustration:
“True Christians know that even deeply rooted wrong desires,
including those that may have a genetic basis or that involve physical causes or environmental factors,
are not insurmountable for persons who truly want to please Jehovah. Some people are by nature highly
emotional. Perhaps in the past they gave free rein to fits of anger; but knowledge of God’s will,
the desire to please him, and the help of his spirit enable them to develop self-control. A person may
be an alcoholic, but, with proper motivation, he can refrain from drinking and thus avoid becoming a
drunkard. Likewise, a person may feel strongly attracted to others of the same sex, but by heeding
the counsel of God’s Word he can remain clean from homosexual practices. (Ephesians 4:17-24)
Jehovah does not allow us to go on thinking that wrong conduct really makes no difference; he kindly but
firmly warns us of the consequences and provides abundant help for those who want to “strip off the old
personality with its practices, and clothe [themselves] with the new personality. (1 Corinthians 3:9,10)
Young people ask vol 2published by Watchtower further elaborates the illustration.
Somebody might be “disposed to rage.” (Proverbs 29:22) After studying the Bible he developed
self-control. Does this mean that he’ll never again feel anger? No. However, because he knows God's will
in regards to uncontrolled anger, strive hard to fight with his feelings. It’s similar with somebody who
is attracted to the same sex but who learned what the Bible says about homosexual practices.
Occasionally an improper desire may still occur, but by viewing homosexuality in the Jehovah's way,
the person can find enough strength to resist that desire. (2 Corinthians 4:7)
It may be hard task for those who are striving to overcome the desires and they may feel down sometimes.
Others in congregations are being encouraged to support them. (1 Thessalonians 5:14)
